Roderick Donald was one of the children of Donald (1837) and Marion (1840), the others being   Catherine (1867), Donald (1878), Isabella (1872), John (1881), Mary (1870), Roderick Donald (1890), Roderick (1874, died aged 10 months), Roderick (1876) and Roderick (1865, died aged 19 years).

His brothers John and Donald were also lost in the war, having served in the Canadians and the RAMC. Roderick survived the war, having served in the Labour Battn.

Roderick was one of the children of Donald (1855) and Annie (1856), the others being Angus (1880), Catherine Ann (1900), Donald (1886), Duncan John (1898), John (1882), Kenneth (1883), Malcolm (1893), Murdo (1889) and Norman (1891) .

His brother Angus was killed in action in 1916, serving with the Seaforth Highlanders.
His brothers Donald and Malcolm also served in the Seaforths; Kenneth was in the RNR as was Norman, and Duncan John was in the Merchant Navy.

Mrs Kenneth Macleod, South Shawbost, received official intimation that her only brother, Sergt. Kenneth Murray, Gordon Highlanders, has been killed in action in France. Kenneth was a student of the Nicolson Institute some years ago and was a great favourite with all his friends. His death came as a shock to all and cast a gloom over the village. Much sympathy is felt for the family.

We deeply regret to announce that on Wednesday 12 September 1917, Widow Duncan Graham received the sad news from the War Office that her only son, Roderick, fell in action in France. Thi sis the second son of Widow Graham who made the noble sacrifice on the field of battle for his country, his brother Donald having fallen at an early stage in the war. Ruairidh was a fine young fellow, possessed of sterling qualities and well liked by all who knew him. We extend our deep sympathy to his widowed mother in her sore and sad bereavement.

His brother Murdo  served with the Gordon Highlanders and was taken POW.
His brother Malcolm served with the Seaforth Highlanders and was wounded twice; after that, he served in the RAF. Both these brothers survived the war.

Stornoway Gazette
Quite a gloom was cast over the community by an intimation from the War Office to Mr Donald Nicolson, 25 Borve, that his youngest son, Roddy, was killed in France. Roddy joined the Seaforth Highlanders when a youth and took part in several engagements and was at home twice recuperating from severe wounds to the head and arm. The deceased was of a bright disposition and much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Nicolson in their bereavement. The other sons on service are Murdo (Gordons) and Malcolm (Seaforths), both of whom have been severely wounded.

The battalion is entrenched to the northeast of Ypres near Wieltje

Quiet day, fine, wind wrong for gas.
East Lancs relieved Somersets after dark and took over trench line from C coy. D coy relieved B coy in front trench round CROSSROAD farm and B & C coys went into support at LA BRIQUE. Some shelling during day on either side of us. Our 6" guns shelled HAMPSHIRE farm.
