The 1881 census shows John (2½) as the grandson of Anne Macaulay at Bayble, and the son of Donald (33) and Anne (28). Their other sons are Aulay (4) and Donald (3 months). A decade later, a John Stewart (15, born at Stornoway) is part of the crew of HMS Impregnable at Devonport. In 1901, he is on board HMS Royal Oak at Malta, with another 98 sailors.

Last week brought sad news to Bayble, concerning the loss of two of the gallant lads who were helping to keep the British flag flying on the seas, namely, Evander Macleod, son of Mr Angus Macleod, merchant, Lower Bayble, and Peter Stewart, son of Mr Peter Stewart, 3 Lower Bayble, who were killed on board HMS Otway, when she was torpedoed by an enemy submarine. Sincere sympathy is felt for the bereaved families.

Not since 2nd February 1915, when HMS Auxiliary Cruiser "Clan Macnaughton" was wrecked in a gale, has Lewis suffered so grievous a sea loss as she did last week when the Auxiliary Cruiser "Otway" was torpedoed and sunk. In the first-named disaster, the ship went down with all hands on board, no less than nine of the crew being Lewis Naval Reservists - two natives of Aird Tong, two of Calbost, one of Arnol, one of Borve, one of South Dell, one of Breasclet and one of Portvoller.
In the case of the Otway, thought the ship was lost, the bulk of the crew, fortunately, were saved. Among the crew of between 300 and 400 there were no fewer than 38 Lewismen. Altogether ten men were killed when the torpedo struck, and of these six were natives of Lewis, namely:

Mr Murdo Stewart, 3 Francis Street, has now been officially informed that his son , Pte James Stewart, Canadians, who was reported missing on 26th September, was killed in action on that date. This is Mr Stewart's second bereavement through the war, his son, Pte Donald Stewart, Seaforth Highlanders, having been killed in action in France on 16th October 1914. Both lads were 25 years of age at the time of their death. Another son, Neil, is serving in the Patrol Section, RNR, and is presently stationed in the Mediterranean. Mr Stewart has the sincere sympathy of the whole community in his sore trial.
The 1901 census shows James aged 10, son of Murdo (33, carter) and Mary (41) at 73 Keith Street in Stornoway. In 1891, they lived at 7 Stag Road, not far away from that end of Keith Street. James's siblings were Donald (11), Catherine Bell (9), Neil Murdo (7) and Maggie Mary (4).
