Another name has to be added to the long list of Raerinish victims of the war. It is that of Finlay Macdonald, son of Angus Macdonald, 3 Raerinish. Finlay had just attained his 19th year. He was so light-hearted and fearless a lad as has ever gone forth from this township. Although young in years, he had already won a peculiar place in the affections of all who knew him. The genial and happy expression ever to be seen on his face and the gentleness of his every action gave him an individuality, irresistibly attractive. Great must be the grief of such a loving and dutiful son.

Official intimation has been received that Corporal Duncan Anderson, 5 Kershader, is presumed to have been killed during the Somme advance. Corpl. Anderson was mobilised in August 1914, being at the time attached to the Seaforth militia. He was sent to France towards the end of that same year, and had been there ever since, having only once got leaving during all that time, when he spent a few days with his friends at home in the winter of 1915. He had seen a great deal of hard fighting, and passed scathless through it all. During the Somme offensive last year, through which he passed without a scratch, he was promoted Corporal and was made chief bomber of his company. A few days ago word was received that he was missing as from the 11th April, and it was reported later that he was presumed to have fallen in action on that date. His older brother, John, is in the Mercantile Marine, and his younger brother, Donald, has lately joined the Seaforths. He was about 22 years of age.

Finlay was a gunner on board a merchantman which was mined or torpedoed on the northeast of England. His body was recovered and taken to Whitby, from whence it was conveyed by rail and steamer to Stornoway. The burial took palce at Laxay Cemetery at 11.30 pm on the 15th September 1917. Deep sympathy is extended to the poor widow, his mother, in her sad bereavement, and it is to be feared the shock caused by the news has proved too much for her physical frame, as she is now seriously ill. The little village of Habost mourns over the death of Finlay, as he was undoubtedly very popular from his boyhood upwards. He was one of Mr John Smith's (now at Breasclet) best scholars, and after secury a bursary passed into the Nicolson Institute where he received his secondary education. He was trained for the teaching profession in Aberdeen, and held appointments at Melvig, Dundee and Auchiltibuie. He was headmaster of the last-named school, and was greatly loved by the people of the district, as was clearly manifested in their gift of a purse of sovereigns before he enlisted in the RNR. He was one of the best athletes of Lochs, as was his father before him, and the youths of the place will miss his happy smile in refereeing their favourite games, which he himself was the first to institute. For the last two years of his life, however, a marked change had come over him. In his early life he was an entusiast in physical things, but latterly he became an entusiast for the cause of Jesus Christ, and we believe it was his firm intention to enter the ministry of the Free Church. Alas, however, death claimed him at the early age of 31 years. We laid his mortal remains to rest in Laxay Cemetery at 11.30 on Saturday night, where he was buried by the light of the lantern. Here, like the hero of Corunna, we left him alone with his glory.

In his early life he was an entusiast in physical things, but latterly he became an entusiast for the cause of Jesus Christ, and we believe it was his firm intention to enter the ministry of the Free Church. Alas, however, death claimed him at the early age of 31 years. We laid his mortal remains to rest in Laxay Cemetery at 11.30 on Saturday night, where he was buried by the light of the lantern. Here, like the hero of Corunna, we left him alone with his glory.

Donald was one of the children of Malcolm (1856) and Christina (1858), the others being Ann (1887), John (1890) and Roderick (1885).
His brothers Roderick and John served in the RNR, and Kenneth was a sergeant in the Highland Light Infantry. Roderick was lost at the Battle of Jutland.
