John is shown in the 1891 census as a 16-year old, living at "Laxdale and Goathill Road no 13" with his parents Malcolm (57) and Annie (50) as well as his siblings Malcolm (20), Mary Ann (13), Alexanderina (10) and Donald (8).

His brother Donald served in the Army Medical Corps and survived the war.

It was with deep and widespread regret it became known that Mrs Malcolm Macmillan, 13 Coulregrein, had received news that her son, Pte John Macmillan, Canadian Mounted Rifles, had fallen in action on 8 August 1918. Pte Macmillan, aged 42, had been in Canada for a number of years before the outbreak of war and was in the fighting line in France for the past two years. He was always bright and cheery and was a general favourite among his acquaintances. The sympathy of the whole community is extended to his widowed mother, sisters and brother in their great loss.

Official notification has been received that Pte Alex Macleod, Canadians, son of Duncan Macleod, Winnipeg, and formerly of 3 Coulregrein, was killed in action in France on 5 September 1917. Pte Macleod was the brother of William G. Macleod. Deceased was aged 26 and had been in Canada for about 6 years before the outbreak of war. The father and another of his sons, John Murdo, are also serving with the Canadians and the youngest son, Duncan, is in hospital in Mesopotamia, suffering from fever.

No further information available; the 1901 Census for Paisley shows a John Mcleod, born 1899, living at 13 Neilston Road, the son of John and Isabella. John Sr was born in Stornoway
