Dugald was one of the children of Alexander (1858) and Annabella (1862), the others being Catherine (1894), Chirsty Bell, Johanna, John Robert (1900) and Margaret (1896).

On Saturday 29 September (1917), a gallant soldier, Corpl. Dugald Macleod, late of the Gordons and son of Alex Macleod, 13 Calbost, passed away. The outbreak of war found Dugald ready, and he went to France in 1914. For a time he was in the thick of the fighting and had some wonderful excapes. Then he was wounded in the shoulder, and after a short spell of hospital life and a brief visit to the home folks, he returned to the front. Again he was wounded and once more he was sent home, being finally discharged. His second wound was more serious, and for a time he made good progress, but lung trouble set in and now he has gone to Peace. A young man of no mean ability, upright in every department of life, dutiful in his family solutions, gentle and kindly among his friends, mates and acquaintances, his loss will be long mourned by a wide circle of admirers. May his memory long remain green. His father and mother, well-known residents in Calbost, have our sincere sympathy in the bereavement.

Dugald appears in the 1901 census, aged 6, the youngest of the children of John (54) and Annie (42) at 37 Eoropie. The older siblings were Annie (24), Murdo (19), Donald (16) and Mary (12).
His brother Donald was in the RNR, but survived the war.
From the battalion's war diary:
The battalion has moved from Bailleul in France to a position near Wieltje, northeast of Ypres in Belgium. Their involvement with the battle starts today.
Very wet indeed.
Moved into position for attack at 4 am.
Attack commences at 5.30 am. Brigades from left to right. R Warwickshire Reg - Seaforth Highlanders - R Dublin Fusiliers - R Irish Fusiliers.
Came under heavy fire when getting into position before attack commenced. Finally took up a position and dug in as well.
6.30 am Absolutely great except for a great deal of shelling on eastern flank. Line readjusted and altered after dark. Trenches improved.From right to left companies B C D
Very wet day till 8 am - fine afternoon. Weather was very hot and sunny. There was a great deal of shelling all the time.
