Robert is shown as a 5-year old on the 1901 census at 2 Holm , with his parents Alexander (50, cooper) and Christina (45). His siblings are Ann (17), Christina (13), Alexander (12), Malcolm (9), Donald (7) and John M (5).

John M is thought to have perished in the sinking of the Lucigen in 1915. Alexander (jr) served in the Royal Engineers, and Donald in the Gordon Highlanders.

We find Robert Norman in the 1891 census at 64 Keith Street, Stornoway, with his mother Christy (29, mason's wife) and his siblings Bella A (11), Alex Donald (9), John Murdo (6) and Annabella (3). John Murdo and Alex Donald were also lost in the Great War.

Many friends in Stornoway will regret to learn that John Murdo Nicolson, son of the late Robert Nicolson, Stornoway, was drowned on 21 April when the ship he was serving on as second officer was torpedoed. Another of Mr Nicolson's sons, Alex Dan, a carpetner in HM Australian Navy, died in hospital on 25 May 1915, while a third son, Robert Norman (Bobby), Seaforths, who was reported missing on 11 April 1917, is now officially reported killed on that day.

Robert emerges in the 1881 census as a 6-year old schoolboy at his grandparents' house on 9 New Street, Stornoway. His father is John (39), a cooper originally from Lybster;, his mother's maiden name is Ann Mackenzie (24), and they have three children. Apart from Robert, there are Catharine (3) and Neil (9 months). Also present is Ann's father Murdo (62).

In 1891, Robert is enumerated on board HMS Impregnable at Devonport; he is there with another seven boys from Lewis. There is no mention of him on the 1901 census.

STIRLING GRAIN TRAVELLER KILLED
Corporal Robert Macaulay

News has come to hand of the death in action in France of Corporal Robert Macaulay, Cameron Highlanders, who was well known in Stirling and district. Deceased was a native of Stornoway, and was for many years a grain traveller with Messrs D & J MacEwen & Coy, Stirling. Subsequently he was a partner of Messrs Farquhar, Macaulay & Coy, potato merchants, Stirling. Afterwards he was employed with a firm of grain merchants in Glasgow, making his headquarters in Stirling. He joined the Lovat Scouts two years ago, and was transferred to the Camerons. He had been in France for about eighteen months.

Tolsta people were very sorry to hear last week that Pte Robert Murray, A & S. Highlanders, had been killed in action last month. The deceased, who was 21 years of age, was the younger brother of Miss Maggie C. Murray, infant mistress in Tolsta Public School from 1909 to 1912. Robert attended the local school for a year while his sister was on the staff, and he was a general favourite amongst the people of the township. After returning home to London in 1911, he went in for engineering. He was a picture of health and vigour and was always cheerful and courageous. He enlisted three months after the war started. After being at the front for over a year, he was gassed and wounded. In his letters home, he always spoke of the Tolsta boys he used to meet in France. His parents, who are natives of Stornoway, have been residing in London for many years. The sympathy of the whole district is extended to the bereaved family.
