Came under heavy fire when getting into position before attack commenced. Finally took up a position and dug in as well.
6.30 am Absolutely great except for a great deal of shelling on eastern flank. Line readjusted and altered after dark. Trenches improved.From right to left companies B C D

Raerinish War Casualties

The news has reached teh village that Donald Macleod, son of Mr John Macleod, 11 Raerinish, has been killed in Mesopotamia. Donald Macleod, who was 19 years of age, was a private in the Seaforths. His brother Neil is, for the second time, reported wounded, this time seriously. Their father received the news of the casualties to his sons by two successive mails. At the same time the death of Murdo Mackinnon, in France, is announced. He was serving in the Canadians. He was twenty-five years of age, and one of five brothers taking part in the war, all of them being sons of Mr Murdo Mackinnon, 8 Raerinish.

He was sent to France towards the end of that same year, and had been there ever since, having only once got leaving during all that time, when he spent a few days with his friends at home in the winter of 1915. He had seen a great deal of hard fighting, and passed scathless through it all. During the Somme offensive last year, through which he passed without a scratch, he was promoted Corporal and was made chief bomber of his company. A few days ago word was received that he was missing as from the 11th April, and it was reported later that he was presumed to have fallen in action on that date. His older brother, John, is in the Mercantile Marine, and his younger brother, Donald, has lately joined the Seaforths. He was about 22 years of age.

Donald was one of the children of Roderick (1857) and Mary (1862), the others being Isabella (1896), John (1908), Malcolm (1891), Margaret (1900), Mary Ann (1902), Murdo (1886), Roderick (1889) and Roderick (1908).
His brothers Murdo and Roderick senior also served in the Seaforth Highlanders; Malcolm John was in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. These three all survived the war.
