Donald John appears in the 1901 census, aged 9, the son of Christina (a shoemaker's wife) and brother of Neil (8), Maggie (6), Johanna (3) and John (1).
His brother Neil was in the Canadians and was wounded; his brother John served in the Ayrshire Yeomanry. Both these survived the war.
