Aulay appears in the 1891 census, aged 3, at home with his parents Aulay (42) and Catherine (39) as well as siblings Mary (11), Ann (8), John (6), Donald (6) and Kenneth (1).
Aulay served in the Howe Battalion of the Royal Naval Division from 19 September until 27 October 1914, when he was discharged to Royal Navy barracks at Portsmouth. Aulay's 1914 star was issued to his brother Kenneth who also served in the RNR but survived the war.
