Stornoway Gazette, 19 April 1918
We regret to announce that news has been received of the death in action
of Pte Donald Macleod, Seaforth Highlanders, son of Mr Norman Macleod,
53 North Tolsta. The deceased, who was 19 years of age, was in the 3rd
Seaforth Highalnders when war broke out. Although then barely 16 and
could, if he desired, have got his discharge on account of youth, he
wrote to his father not to try on any account to get him out of the
army. He was sent to France in March 1915, before he was 17 years old.
He was wounded on several occasions.
Donald was a very plucky young soldier, greatly beloved by his comrades.
Indeed, he was one of nature's gentlemen and will be sorely missed by
the people of the district, by whom he was much liked and highly
respected. the heartfelt sympathy of the community is extended to the
bereaved family.
