Was studying for the ministry at outbreak of war. Writing to Lt
Macdonald's father, his captain said: "We had put up two big mines and
your son and another officer were detailed with a party of men to seize
the craters. They gallantly succeeded in doing this. Having shortly
afterwards to give up one of the craters, your son, with great pluck and
at great risk, came back for men. Having obtained them, he again
returned to the attack. Unfortunately, just as he got into the crater,
he got shot."
