John is shown in the 1901 census aged 8, living at Tolsta South End 8 with his parents Kenneth (45) and Mary (40) as well as his sisters Isabella (11), Christina (3) and Mary (5 months). John was the only son of this family. 

John was in Drake Bn (RND, D/753) from 16 September until 27 October 1914, discharged to Portsmouth. On HMS Venerable from 19 March 1918 until his death.
