The 1901 census finds Malcolm aged 14, at home with his parents Angus (46) and Mary (42) as well as his siblings Andrew (10), Kenneth (8), Alexander (6) and Angus (2). The 1891 census adds Allan (then aged 8) and Donald (6) to the family.

He was one of six brothers who served in the war. Andrew was in the Seaforths; Alexander died of disease whilst in the Artillery; Kenneth was in the Scots Guards; Donald was a diver in the Royal Navy, and Angus served in the Trawler section of the Royal Naval Reserve.
