John is shown in the 1901 census as being in his grandparents' house at 9 Sheshader. His grandparents were Alexander and Chirstina Macaulay. Also present were his parents Aulay (44) and Catherine (38); Catherine was to pass away before the onset of war. John's brother is aged 14; John is 10 and his baby sister Maggie is 1 year old.
