Stornoway Gazette, 1917
We much regret having to announce the death of RNR Donald Campbell, Lower Garrabost, at hospital in Chatham on Friday last (6 July 1917). He had been through an operation last spring from the effects of which he did not fully recover. He was home in April after partially recovering from his illness. The state of health recently necessitated a second operation at Chatham. But from this he did not recover and the sad news of his death was reported by wire on Friday evening. He leaves a widow and 7 young children who, along with his aged parents, brothers and sisters, mourn his sudden death. Campbell was a well-known man in the fishing industry. He was of a bright and happy disposition, and was endowed with superior intelligence and many natural gifts are common among the fishing class. The sad news was learned with much sorrow on Saturday morning [7 July] throughout the district. The kind sympathy of the community is being shown towards the bereaved family.
