Mr Torquil Macdonald, 4 Portvoller, has been informed that his son, Alex John (RNR), was lost on 7 December 1917. He had been doing duty as a gunner on board, a merchantman which had been torpedoed and sunk. Alick John who was aged 21, was the mainstay of his family. His father has been an invalid for many years. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents.
He was awarded a Russian decoration for his excellent work in fighting two German submarines off the Kola Inlet on 4 May 1917.
