Malcolm was one of the children of Malcolm (1855) and Joan (1868), the others being Alex John (1897), Catherine (1906), Elizabeth (1896), Janet (1900), John (1911), John (1902), Norman (1909) and Norman (1904, only lived for 10 days).

His brother Alexander John served in the Seaforth Highlanders, and survived the war.
