Murdo John was one of the children of Malcolm (1838) and Janet (1848), the others being Alexander (1884), Ann (1880), Donald (1882), John (1874), Malcolm (1878), Marion (1876), Mary (1871), Murdo (1887) and an unnamed infant who but lived for 12 days in 1873.

His brother Alex was in the Canadian forces, and Malcolm in the RNR.
