John was one of the children of William (1860) and Catherine (1862), the others being Alexander (1900), Donald (1888), Isabella (1891), John (1887), Kenneth (1896) and Roderick (1907).
His brother Alexander served in the Gordon Highlanders; his brother Donald served in the Merchant Navy. These two survived the war.
