Donald was one of the children of Malcolm (1835) and Janet (1860), the others being Donald (1880), John (1898, died aged 16), John (1893), Kenneth (1882), Malcolm (1878), Margaret (1884), Murdo (1890), Peter (1895) and Roderick Angus (1887).

His brother Murdo served in the Canadians and served in France with Eaton Motor Machine Gun Corps. Wounded at Roye

His brother Peter served in the Seaforth Highlanders and served in France; gunshot wound in right hand at Somme; invalided home in 1917. after 15 weeks in hospital.
