Stornoway Gazette, 12 July 1918
The deepest gloom has been cast over the whole village and district owing to receipt of the news that Signaller Colin Smith, Seaforths, of 27 Balallan, ahd paid the supreme sacrifice in France on 28 June 1918. Mr Smith, who prior to the war was both merchant and sub-postmaster, was held in the highest esteem by the whole community and much genuine sympathy is extended to his young sorrowing widow and family and other relatives.
