Finlay appears in the 1901 census, aged 5, one of the 6 children of  Marth (?) (32), Ann (38), the others being Donald (15), Rodrick (13), William (11), John (6) and Maggie (2).

His brothers Donald, William and John all served in the RNR during the war, and survived.
