John was one of the children of Colin (1847) and Catherine (1853), the others being Angus (1891), Angus (1899, lived for 1 year), Catherine (1880), Christine Ann (1884), Malcolm (1889), Margaret (1895), Margaret (1882) and Roderick (1887).
His brother Malcolm was in the Cameron Highlanders, and Roderick served with the Canadians. Both these were wounded during the war, but survived.
