Donald was one of the children of Donald (1855) and Margaret (1855), the others being Allan (1898), Angus (1900), Barbara (1895), Isabella (1885), John (1891), Kenneth, Margaret (1887), Marion (1893) and Marion (1888, died an infant).
His brothers John and Allan also served in the RNR; Allan was saved from the sinking of the Iolaire.
