John was one of the 12 children of Norman (1843) and Catherine (1859), the others being Angus (1894), Annie (1897), Chirsty Ann (1902), Donald (1883), Duncan (1890), Jane (1880, died aged 2 months), Jane (1882), Malcolm (1900), Marion (1887), Murdo (1878) and Norman (1885).
His brother Donald served in the RNR and was drowned in 1916; his brother Angus was killed in action in 1916.
