Donald was one of the 12 children of Norman (1843) and Catherine (1859), the others being Angus (1894), Annie (1897), Chirsty Ann (1902), Duncan (1890), Jane (1880, died aged 2 months), Jane (1882), John (1892), Malcolm (1900), Marion (1887), Murdo (1878) and Norman (1885).

His brother Donald served in the RNR and was drowned in 1916; his brother John was killed in action in 1914.

Joined Anson Bn, RND (D/94) on 19 September 1914.
