Murdo appears in the 1901 census at 59 Habost, aged 14. He lives there with his parents John (50) and Bella (38) as well as his siblings Chirsty (8), Roderick (6), Alexander (3) and John (3 months).
His brother Norman died in hospital in 1917 having served with the Royal Engineers; his brother Alexander John was lost in the Iolaire Disaster of 1919, having served in the RNR. His brother Roderick served with the Seaforth Highlanders but survived the war.
