Alexander appears in the 1901 census at 59 Habost, aged 3. He lives there with his parents John (50) and Bella (38) as well as his siblings Murdo (14), Chirsty (8), Roderick (6) and John (3 months).
His brother Norman died in hospital in 1917 having served with the Royal Engineers; his brother Murdo died of wounds in 1917 having served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers in Palestine. His brother Roderick served with the Seaforth Highlanders but survived the war.
