John was one of three sons of Lt Col John N Macrae DSO who served during the war, and the only one to lose his life. The colonel's brother David served in the Canadians; the colonel himself served in the Seaforths, as did his sons Hector and Donald; his son Malcolm was in the Royal Engineers.
