Hector is shown in the 1891 census as a 12-year old scholar at 11 Branahuie with his parents Angus (44, crofter and fisherman) and Catherine (39) as well as siblings Angus (14), Robert (9), John (6), Ann (3) and Bella and Mary Ann (both aged 9 months - twins?).
His brother John served in the Canadian Army but survived the war.
