His death is recorded as "Killed or died by means other than disease, accident or enemy action".
The 1881 census shows John (2½) as the grandson of Anne Macaulay at Bayble, and the son of Donald (33) and Anne (28). Their other sons are Aulay (4) and Donald (3 months). A decade later, a John Stewart (15, born at Stornoway) is part of the crew of HMS Impregnable at Devonport. In 1901, he is on board HMS Royal Oak at Malta, with another 98 sailors.
