John is shown in the 1891 census as a 1-year old, living at Claide Road (Bayble) with his parents Peter (28) and Jessie (27). Also present are his siblings Norman (3) and Norman (3 months).

Of his brothers, Kenneth John drowned off Italy in 1918. Donald, Donald and Norman junior survived the war after serving in the RNR. Norman senior served in the Canadian forces between 1916 and 1918.
