John Alexander is found as John A Macleod at 12 North Beach Street, Stornoway, in the 1901 census. He is aged 7, the son of George (47, baker) and Margaret (46). Margaret's mother, Ann Campbell (80), is also in the house. Apart from John Alex, we also see his siblings Maggie (18), Williamina (13) and Alexandrina (6).

John Alex's brother Donald also served, in the Royal Naval Reserve.
