Murdo appears in the 1901 census, aged 16, the son of Donald (57) and Christy (45), and brother of Isabella (19), Margaret (13) and Mary Ann (11). The 1891 census also shows Murdo aged 7, and his older siblings Roderick (13) and Chirstina (11).
His brother Peter was killed in action serving with the Seaforth Highlanders only a month before; his brother Roderick served in the RNR but survived the war.
