John was one of the children of Alexander and Margaret (1856), the others being  Christina (1895), Donald, Isabella and Robert.

John was previously in the RNR under number A/2310. In the RND Anson Bn (C/127) from 19 September 1914, with HMS Macedonia from 17 August 1917 until 27 December 1918 when he was posted to HMS Vivid III.
