Donald appears in the 1901 census at the School House in Ranish (no 41). He was aged 14, the son of Malcolm (44) and Maggie (40) and brother of Neil (9), Norman (7) and Marion (3).

His brother Norman served with the Royal Naval Division, and was interned in Holland during most of the war; his brother Neil served in the RNR; both these survived the war.
