Donald was one of the children of Roderick (1857) and Mary (1862), the others being  Isabella (1896), John (1908), Malcolm (1891), Margaret (1900), Mary Ann (1902), Murdo (1886), Roderick (1889) and Roderick (1908).

His brothers Murdo and Roderick senior also served in the Seaforth Highlanders; Malcolm John was in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. These three all survived the war.
