Donald John was one of the children of Angus (1853) and Ann (1860), the others being Angus John (1888), Angus (1887), Angus (1883, died in infancy), Chirsty Ann (1898), Christina (1886), Colin (1892), John (1896), Malcolm (1895), Malcolm (1890) and Roderick (1884). 

His brother Colin was in the Ross Mountain Battery; Malcolm in the Cameron Highlanders and John in the  RNR.
