Alex was one of the children of John (1858) and Annabella (1860), the others being Donald (1888), Donald (1886), Effie (1890) and Malcolm (1883).
His brother Malcolm also served in the RNR; his older brother Donald was in the Canadians, and his younger brother Donald served in the Seaforth Highlanders. These three survived the war.
