Norman was one of the children of Kenneth (1852) and Augusta (1846), the others being  Angus M (1882), Ann (1885), Annabella (1880), Kenneth (1883) and Norman (1887).

His brother Kenneth (a doctor) also served in the Argylls; his brother Angus was in the Canadians; both these survived the war.
