Murdo was one of the children of Donald (An Covey) and Margaret (nee Kemp), the others being Angus John, Ann, Barbara (1906), Catherine Ann (1898), Christina, Donald, Donald and Margaret.
The 1901 census shows the family at Caversta, headed by Donald (37) and Peggie [Margaret] (33), and Christy (9), Murdo (7), Donald (5), Katy Ann (3) and Peggie (2 months).
Two of his brothers, both named Donald, served in the RNR during the war and survived.
