John was one of the children of Donald (1837) and Marion (1840), the others being   Catherine (1867), Donald (1878), Isabella (1872), John (1881), Mary (1870), Roderick Donald (1890), Roderick (1874, died aged 10 months), Roderick (1876) and Roderick (1865, died aged 19 years).

His brothers Donald and Roderick Dan were also lost in the war, having served in the RAMC and the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Roderick survived the war, having served in the Labour Battn.
