Donald was one of the children of Angus (1852) and Isabella (1853), the others being Angus (1884), Christina (1877, died as a child), Donald (1881), John (1890), Mary Ann (1885, died as infant), Mary Ann (1887), Murdo (1878), Peggy (1898) and an unnamed infant that did not live beyond the year of its birth, 1893.
His brother John was in the Royal Naval Division, a POW in Germany; his brother Murdo was in the Labour Corps. Both these survived the war.
