Roderick was one of the children of Donald (1855) and Annie (1856), the others being Angus (1880), Catherine Ann (1900), Donald (1886), Duncan John (1898), John (1882), Kenneth (1883), Malcolm (1893), Murdo (1889) and Norman (1891) .

His brother Angus was killed in action in 1916, serving with the Seaforth Highlanders.
His brothers Donald and Malcolm also served in the Seaforths; Kenneth was in the RNR as was Norman, and Duncan John was in the Merchant Navy.
