John appears in the 1901 census, aged 5, one of the eight children of Norman (43) and Margaret (40); the others being Johanna (12), Annie (10), Murdo (9), Mary (7), Maggie (4), Angus (3) and George (1).
His brother Angus was in the RNR and survived the war; John was in the Cameron Highlanders and was killed in 1918.
