A gloom was castover the village last Friday (19 October 1917) when the
sad news became known that Pte John Macdonald, Seaforths, is reported
missing, believed killed, on the 28th August. His aunt, Mrs Macdonald,
Carnan Street, received the painful intelligence in a letter from his
captain. John was one of those who went to France in September 1914, and
has been in the firing line most of the time. He was both gassed and
wounded. He was a very brave soldier, always cheerful despite hardships.
John was loved by all who knew him, and is deeply mourned. He was in
Glasgow on short leave last summer, and looked extremely well and fit, a
splendid type of Highland soldier. Much sympathy is felt for his only
brother, Corpl. William Macdonald, Seaforths, and his relatives.
