Finlay appears in the 1901 census at 21B Callanish, aged 4, the son of Finlay (51) and Annie (44) and brother of Mary (16), Donald (12), Chirsty (10), Donald (8), Kenneth (5) and Maggie Ann (2).

His brothers Kenneth and Donald also served in the Seaforths, and were killed in action in 1917 and 1916 respectively.  His brother Hugh also served, but survived the war.
