Donald was one of the eight children of John and Christina, these being Mary (1889, died aged 8 months), John (1891), Neil (1893), Mary (1895), George Angus (1899), Murdo (1901) and Marion (1903).
His brother John was killed serving with the Seaforths in 1915. Neil was also in the Seaforths but survived, as did George Angus, who was in the RNR.
