Donald was in the Anson Battalion of the Royal Naval Division at Antwerp on 19 September 1914. He was discharged due to TB on 29 August 1916. His 1914 star was issued to his mother on 31 December 1919.

Donald appears in the 1891 census, aged 5, at 20 South Bragar, with his parents Angus (36) and Catherine (30) and brother of Christy (9) and Catherine (3). The 1901 census adds Malcolm (10), John Murdo (7), Peggy (4) and Angus (1).

His brother Angus served in the RNR and survived the war; his brother Murdo was killed in action in 1916, whilst serving with the Canadians.
