Murdo is shown in the 1891 census aged 6, at home in South Dell with his parents Donald (31) and Catherine (33) and his siblings Christina (5), Bella (2) and Alexander (2 months). 

His brother Donald, serving in the 2nd Seaforth Highlanders, was killed during the Battle of the Somme in October 1916. His brothers Norman and Alexander served in the RNR and survived the war.
